Relationship Development Intervention, or RDI, is a cognitive remediation program that teaches children with autism how to think and problem solve flexibly in a dynamic world. Here are some essential principles of RDI:
RDI teaches dynamic intelligence.
Dynamic intelligence includes the type of flexible, adaptive thinking required to function independently in a world which is unpredictable, imperfect and constantly changing. Here are just a couple examples of dynamic skills:
RDI is a parent-driven program.
Parents are the primary effectors of change for children in the RDI program. Your RDI consultant will coach you as you help your child engage in real world activities that promote development of dynamic thinking.
RDI is a developmental program.
RDI teaches dynamic thinking skills by retracing the course of typical development. We look at each stage of child development and make sure your child gains all of the dynamic thinking skills in each stage before moving on to the next stage.
RDI is individualized.
RDI is not a "one size fits all" approach. Every child and family has a unique profile of strengths and needs. What works for one family may not be appropriate for another. Your RDI consultant will collaborate with you to design a program that is effective for your child and family.
RDI is systematic.
The RDI program includes well-organized and carefully sequenced child and parent objectives. Complex skills are addressed in manageable pieces.
RDI supports families.
You will be supported as you learn to implement RDI. Your consultant will proceed at your pace, making sure you are comfortable with each piece of the program before moving on. Sessions are tailored to suit your learning style.
